A Little Bit Off the Beaten Path

Ok, this isn't the typical romantical type of place, but the old apothecary-turned-restaurant is pretty cool. You can still get romantic here.
No food is worth the terrible service you get at York Street Cafe.

I went out to York Street Cafe with some coworkers on a Wednesday night. It took us over 2 and a half hours to order, eat, and pay. The service was truly terrible, our server didn't offer us bread until we had been there 20 minutes, didn't explain the delay, and only sporadically took our orders for drinks. My wife and I had to practically accost her to get in an order for a drink! Our server had no clue as to how to separate our checks, and I have gotten income tax returns faster than it took this lady to run all of our cards.
The food was good, but you can find it elsewhere, and not watch your fellow diners age while you wait on food. We are never going there again.
- Pros: You can leave, they probably won't notice.
- Cons: Terrible service
Terrible service by Ryan; good food at high prices

I just returned from York St. Cafe and was compelled to review this restaurant while still fresh in my mind. The service by Ryan, our waiter, was awful: 1) He did not offer the wine special for $1 a bottle that we overheard the waitress next to us offer another couple, 2) He did not offer us bread the table next to us got (I asked and got it), 3) He did not clear our salad plates promptly (waited 10 minutes), 4) He did not have daily specials memorized (read his slip of paper--very poor form), 5) He was not prompt in refilling water (empty glass sat on the table for 10 minutes and was only refilled when asked), 6) He waited until we were over half-way done with our meal before checking in to see how the food was, 7) The manager had to take payment since Ryan was slow to pick up the credit card, and 8) We were not thanked by Ryan on the way out for coming to the restaurant. Clearly this level of service could not merit a good tip. And my tip to you all is to avoid this restaurant. Despite the very nice decor of the restaurant and the good food, it was not worth the high entree prices ($17-$25)--especially with bad service. Kudos, however, to the African American waitress serving the table next to us. Watching her interact with the couple next to us, she was truly outstanding and professional! If you do go to this restaurant, ask for her!
- Pros: nice decor, good food
- Cons: terrible service, overpriced food
Food is different but very good. Be prepared to try something new.

Really neat old building with lots of period decoration. Try it on a Saturday when the Big Band is playing upstairs. Unlikely place to find this great type of entertainment. You really get to see the band working out. I believe they will serve you up there too. Got to be one the most unique places around town.
- Pros: Great ambience and music on the right night.
- Cons: Not much parking, probably have to park on street.

Take a Date, For Sure!

A great date restaurant. Sit on the couches, or on the patio. Share a Mediterranean Board. Split a dessert. Head upstairs to hear a great band play in the lounge. Make her believe you found this undiscovered gem of a restaurant in Newport all by yourself.
- Pros: Laid Back, Food & Music, Locally owned
- Cons: A little pricey
