An absolute staple for Cincy folk. This Greek-style chili (rich, semi-sweet meat sauce atop spaghetti noodles and crowned with a mountain of shredded cheddar) is a must when in town. Ask for a 5-way "dry" and try a cheese Coney or two on the side. It's bizarre but oddly addictive.
favorite. I just moved to Cincy from Texas and have fallen in love with this skyline near my office. I can't wait to bring back skyline to houston with me.
unsatisfied. Will never eat here again!.
I walked through the doors, to a packed casual restaurant filled with dirty tables. I suppose my timing could have been better, it was maybe a few minutes after 6? So anyway...my party waited around and we got a table, sat down, and ordered a 4way with onion. They give you some crackers and a beverage, and then more waiting. Finally after 5-10 minutes, they bring me out a 3way covered with cheese. Way too much cheese, and the consistency was not right. The chili seemed watered down and tasteless, and after eating through the cheese, I found they didn't put any onions on my 3way. I didn't bother asking for a new one, as the place looked like hell, and the service was slow and uncourteous. So instead I ate the cheese and spaghetti, and at the bottom of my plate was WATER! straight up, a ton of water/chili mix. It looked appealing until I ate the cheese, but once that was over, it turned to disgust.
This was my first time eating at skyline, and I can say now, without a shadow of a doubt, there is better chili out there. I tried gold star the other night, and it was phenomenal in comparison. I can only speculate how the other cincinnati style chili is, but I will soon find out and report back!
Cincinnati is famous for its unique style of chili, and this is where it all began..
In Short
Served since 1949, Skyline's version is not the thick, chunky brew that typically comes to mind when you think of chili. The sauce itself is thin with ground beef and secret seasonings that purportedly include a pinch of chocolate. The 3-way is made up of spaghetti, chili and mounds of finely grated cheddar cheese. The other signature item is the chili cheese Coney, a hot dog on a bun covered with chili, cheese, onions and mustard.
Either like it or hate it. Odds are if you are not from Cincy, you will not like the chili. I have many friends outside of Cincy try it and not like it. It is really more of a meat sauce, with a hint of cinnamin and chocolate. DO NOT EAT IT BY ITSELF. I prefer to eat it on hot dogs, or a 5 way. Overall, the food is fairly inexpensive and is prepared very quickly. If you are from out of town, it is worth trying once. But, if you want a more tomato based chili, check out Goldstar chili, Skyline's town rival.
Excellent food!.
Great food any time of the day! My husband didn't like it when he first moved to Cincinnati, but then tried it again and was hooked. He asks for it more than I do!
Give it another shot before you say you don't like it... it's excellent chili!
We miss skyline!!. My husband and I recently moved to Maine and we both miss Skyline so much. I grew up in Cincinnati and Skyline has always been a favorite. My parents ship us frozen tubs of Skyline and boxes of Skyline Oyster Crackers (they have to be Skyline crackers....other crackers are not the same). I really like this particular Skyline. It was owned by an old neighbor of mine. Our first stop when we hit Cincinnati is always Skyline!!
I miss Skyline so much!!. Having lived in the Cincinnati area all my life, I love Skyline so much. Now that I live in Florida I can't have it anymore except when I visit Ohio but I do eat there every time I go back!! They need to build a Skyline here in Orlando (where I live) so I don't have to fly all the way back to Ohio to visit Skyline. Skyline is definitely my favorite restaurant!!
I love Skyline. I love this place. I was born and raised in Cincinnati. I live in Florida now, but I make it a point to eat at skyline every time I go back to visit my parents. I miss having it right down the road! The food is the best and also fairly cheap.
Faboo!!!!.
Skyline Chili, Groesbeck, 8635 Colerain Ave., 45251 is THE BEST SKYLINE CHILI IN THE CITY!!!!! Not only are the portions large, but the food is served with a smile and the management go out of their way to make you feel welcome. The recent renovations are top notch making this location the most beautiful Skyline in the city.
Don't take my word for it - try it for yourself! Notice the "wall of fame" when you enter the vestibule ---this location has earned EVERY one of their awards, and rightfully so!!!!
A good place with friends. I have always had great service and the prices are reasonable. While I find the food tasty and generally plentiful, the chili and the size of the coneys didn't quite match up to what I grew up with in Detroit. Must be hometown bias :) But a good place to go with friends at any rate.
