The Scene
Expect a healthy cross section of Clifton at this morning diner: white collar, blue collar, retirees and students. The plate glass storefront gives passersby a great view of the cook working the griddle, while inside, the bottleneck entrance opens onto a small dining area. A foggy concept of "healthy eating" and a heavy reliance on grease are ever-present in the food. Stacks of pancakes and fried potatoes, double-decker sandwiches and half-pound burgers crowd the tabletops.

This place was not clean at all. The food was very average at best. And we had to wait a long time just to be seated then we had to wait a long time to get our food. Don't waste your time.

You may get good food a lot of places, but it's the people that take the Proud Rooster beyond culinary competition. Breakfast and lunch are great (no dinner hours), especially the fried chicken - order triple what you think you will eat, because you'll eat twice as much and want to take home leftovers (good hot or cold). Bob and Barb, along with the rest of the wait staff, make everyone feel welcome. Between the morning and noon rush, retirees hang out nursing their cups of coffee and chatting with anyone. No pretense here (and no pretentious coffee like double lattes with 2% soy milk and jambo root undertones), just the salt of the earth. When my mentally ill brother sometimes wandered the streets, Bob and Barb invited him in, totally unconcerned that his weirdness might cause some customers to shy away. More than that, they kept an eye out for him, and for my aging mother as well. These are the people that make a restaurant more than a business and a business district more than a bunch of stores: the Proud Rooster is part of the neighborhood - and a good neighbor to boot.
