The Scene
Nighttime owns the buzz at Kaldi's, with everyone from the cultural elite to tavern regulars stopping by. There's a full bar and free entertainment, including '60s-style jazz trios and acoustic singer-songwriters. Local artists display their works on the walls, while the bookshelves are stocked with thousands of titles, from pulp fiction to philosophical treatises.
The Food
You'll salivate over veggie lasagna, red beans and rice, blackened tofu burritos and a delicious "Un-burger" made with a seitan patty. Try the soup of the day, and if you want something non-vegetarian, get the club sandwich or a blackened chicken pita. Kaldi's opens early on weekdays to serve coffee and pastries; weekends, the quaint brunch from 10am to 2pm features French toast, breakfast burritos, croissants and good old bacon and eggs.

Kaldi's has reopened, and the vibe is pertty much the same, but the service and consistency are both dramatically improved. The coffee is still top-notch, and they have added beers on tap, including several of the local (and excellent) Barrelhouse beers. If you haven't been down in a while, you should try it out again.

Kaldi's is a great place to grab a meal, a cup of coffee, or just hang out with friends. The atmosphere is totally laid back, and they have live music some nights. One side of is a bar (smoking allowed), while the other side has tables (non-smoking). They have walls and walls of books, that I think you can read while you are there. It's not somewhere to go when you're in a rush, as it sometimes takes a little while to get served, but it's not really the kind of place people in a rush go to anyway. They have a full bar, so you can also get coffee drinks with the liquor of your choice or just get a regular drink without coffee. The espresso isn't the strongest around, but the atmosphere makes up for it. PROS: Great Atmosphere CONS: Not safe at night
