Terrible. Worst meal I've ever had. The owner looked as if he had dug his suit out of the dumpster and was not especially interested in providing good service. We ordered a bottle of riesling and did not receive it until appetizers were served. The food was undercooked. The fish was full of bones and raw on the inside. My colleague ordered the 100% soup and it was cold. I tried this place on the recommendation of a friend. We had to wait half an hour before the check was presented, and our complaints about the food were ignored. I have never been so embarrassed or humiliated in front of business clients in my life. I will never go back.
Perfect Experience.. Upon my first visit to The China Gourmet I was greeted with an impeccable waitstaff crowned by the host who was polite and very friendly as if I were coming to her dining room to have dinner. I was greeted by a very pretty and also friendly wait staff member who took my drink and food order promptly.I started with the tuna tartar a playful sushi grade tuna dish served on top of wonton chips and fresh spinach placed neatly around the surface of the dish. I had a glass of the 2005 Foppiano Pinot Grigio with dinner which was reasonably priced (6$) and very ambient of the mood in the restaurant.Bold and Lively.I ordered the Pan Fried Walleye with a small side of the Szechuan Beans which came to the table rather quickly which made me nervous at first but the fish cooked thoroughly and the beans had a fresh and hand picked feel.The fish I ordered was delicious. The flavors were rich and vibrant and very traditional. While the price was steep it made for a very wonderful night out. By comparison to most restaurants in the area it is the paradigm of Chinese upscale dining.With top notch service and sumptuous food this place is sure to stay a mainstay in Cincinnati dining
This restaurant has gone downhill.
I don't know what happened to the restaurant. I think that #2 son Tenley has dishonored himself and his family with the remake of this once great restaurant. I don't care about the aesthetics of the place, but the food quality has really slipped. I think that Tenley was so set upon this renovation that he spent himself into the poorhouse, and the food is suffering for it.
I have had 7 meals at china Gourmet since the renovation, each one progressively worse than the last. The past few experiences have included fish that was FAR from fresh, half raw chicken, and burnt food. On my last visit I sent back the raw chicken, and the waiter returned with a message from the kitchen, I kid you not, "the cook's said he's sorry; he didn't know it was for you". A shocking state of affairs.
I have reluctantly decided not to go back again, at least not until things change significantly, after 20 years patronage. There arfe simply too many good restaurants around these days to waste your time and money here.
An Enduring Tradition. China Gourmet's recent makeover is simply a new look for a time honored restaurant. The Moy family continues to stand head and shoulders above the competition with a combination of personal, friendly service and great food. Do yourself a favor and order any of the seafood specials. China Gourmet creates the best fish dishes in the city. I'm sure that Bing is anything but disappointed.
A Once Great Restaurant Is No More. When Bing Moy ran China Gourmet it was a treasure; artisanal Cantonese food and great service. Unfortunately the 'B' team has taken over, Bing's #2 son has taken over the show, and the decline in the food and service (but not the prices!) sticks out like a sore thumb. The gauche renovation the owner has just given the place in a desperate attempt to take on a 'hip urban' look can't cover for the poor state of the cuisine. There are two dozen other restaurants in the area doing the same food as China Gourmet does today, including chains like PF Changs (sadly true), and many of them are mush better, and less expensive. Why bother with China Gourmet? I certainly don't anymore.

Although Bing Moy, the restaurant's founder, has retired, his customers still enjoy the Moy family tradition of quality. Try the "100 percent" soup for two--chicken stock with shrimp, bits of chicken, julienned vegetables and a whiff of sesame oil. Hot and sour is crammed with black mushrooms, lily buds, bamboo shoots and diced pork tenderloin. The fresh and tender walleye is slowly steamed with ginger and scallion sauce.
VERY VERY GOOD!!!. Although the food may not be "traditional" its very good! I love the New Chicken and the Cashew Chicken is different with a light sweeter sauce that is wonderful! The Egg Drop soup is also good, the service is fantastic and the no smoking on the weekends is an added plus! The main dishes are a bit more pricey than say PF Changs but they are well worth the extra dollar or two!
off the menu. not much is authentic or very good about the food on the menu. ordering off the menu on a slower night is fantastic. howard does know great food!
