In Short – Built in 1863, this building housed the first school in the Midwest with a second story. The place still boasts a home-spun appeal, from the goats and geese roaming around out back to the family-style dining: the menu, like the rest of the place, relies heavily on simple, all-American charms. Traditional entrees like fried chicken, roast beef, meatloaf and fried shrimp are accompanied by balanced-meal choices like fluffy mashed potatoes and vegetables.

We LOVE this place. I cannot understand the first review.
I don't think I have ever had better fried chicken. The baby beef liver & onions, to die for. My wife will tell you she doesn't like cole slaw, but when we go to The Schoolhouse, sometimes she will eat 3 helpings of slaw. You have never had stewed tomatoes until you've had them at The Schoolhouse.
The restaurant itself is so quaint. The prices, quite reasonable. PS, try the corn fritters! Yummy.
- Pros: Best food around, period
- Cons: Inconsistant hours
Are You Kidding?

I and 11 others visited the Schoolhouse Restaurant this evening (my first time) and I have heard from local Fodder and online reviews alike that this place was the best in town for Fried Chicken and "good 'ol down home cookin"....well my question is this. What town? I would very much like to visit the kitchen as I have serious doubts as to whether the chicken is breaded there, or pre-prepared and then just fried there. The chicken was dry, and at that price for 7 pieces of chicken makes KFC look like a great deal. Yes you get your food served "family style" on a lazy susan...let me add on top of a fake stick on table cloth, the green beans were obviously from a large can or jar, the cole- slaw if it really is home made should take a Que from even a "value brand" at your local grocery, if you have ever actually had home made apple sauce you would know immediately that it wasnt from any home nearby. The salad was the same kind of dreary near limp mix that was served with some what I believe is some French and Catalina dressings' combined. As far as the dessert menu? Sure the cobbler's etc sounded good, but by the time I got to that point, I didn't want to pay that much for what I was afraid may have been purchased at the local grocer's bakery section and then sold with what would equal about a 150% mark up. Now don't get me wrong, the staff is friendly, I hear that they only employ locals in what was described as a deprived town, it is a very cool school house, there is a pen in the back with a couple of goats that the kids can pay 25 cents and feed them. Its right off of the Loveland/Little Miami Bike Trail which if you are from the surrounding area has an appeal all its own. The problem is, is that once you get the bill, a lot of that charm dis-appears. The guy at the table next to me (its tight) knew the owner/manager personally and told me that every year he and wife travel to some exotic location in the off season. This year they took a long vacation to visit many points down the South American Coast. I couldn't help but wonder as I was paying the bill if the "down home cookin" was laughing all the way to the beach.
- Pros: Friendly Staff and eating in an historical schoolhouse
- Cons: Wait Time, Price and Faux "Home Cookin"
Best Fried Chicken!

I think that this restaurant is wonderful! The fried chicken is really tastey and tastes just like home. It's only an old one room school house so it is really small. The servers can give you a family meal and you will get mashed potatoes, salad, cole slaw, applesauce, and cornbread. My personal favorite is the homemade applesauce! They also have a farm in the back, with some farm animals you can feed. Great for kids!
- Pros: Great food! Farm in the back for kids.
- Cons: Had to wait a long time for seating. Not very much parking.
