Awesome Cajun Food - Great Experience! Not for kids. Having previously lived in an area where cajun restaurants were not in short supply I have not been to any cajun restaurants since i moved here. The food was GREAT!!! I shared my plate of food with my sister and was more than stuffed. Their raw oysters in a half shell are Huge and I would recommend anyone try them at least once! Choosing the safe route I tried their sampler platter - great choice - the gumbo, etouffee, and jambalaya were all delicious. I would probably skip the blackened chicken and beef in the future. As for desserts I didnt particularly care for any of them but i am particularly picky with desserts. My less critical friends and family really enjoyed the key lime pie. Atmosphere was great, service a tad slow, and prices a tad high, but all in all well worth it.
Horrible Horrible service....did not even get seated. Left and went to Pompilo's in Newport. We made reservations for 7:30 for our anniversary and was told that we could have outside seating. We arrived about 7:15 and was greeted by the hostess/barmaid/server/seater. The hostess told us it would be around 10 minutes and that a table was just leaving and getting their bill. We sat at the bar area and had a drink. 20 minutes went by and I told my husband that I thought she may have forgotten us because I saw patrons leaving the outside area. I approached the hostess and indeed she did forget us and offered to buy us a drink and said it would be another 10 minutes. After sitting over and hour and 500 more "just 10 more minutes" my husband left and went out to the car. Just as I was leaving she said a seat was available. I went out to get him and told him the table was ready he said he would never give them his money and we were going to Pompilo's. So, needless to say we never tasted the food and never got our "free" drink. By the way, Pompilo's was delicious.
Understanding your dining area. The food here can be HOT hence the (Cajun Name), but the good news is they have Steaks, Lobster and other choices for the non-Cajun eaters. This is one of my favorite places to eat. Here is why. It is tucked away in Kentucky off the beaten path. A quaint drive that let?s you know you are getting away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. This helps set the mood for the evening there. Life seems a little slower here and this helps to unwind. The patio in the summer is a great place to have a cold drink and relax. The bar is small, and It can get busy on weekend and during crawfish boils, so plan accordingly. It has one of the largest selections of hot sauces in any restaurant I have been to. The Cajun food is very good I love most of what I have had and in most cases it seems very authentic. The Gumbo stands out, it has the most wonderful Smokey roux and nice spicy andouille sausage. There is a great sampler plate that let?s you try most of their specialties and if you are new to Cajun food this is a great way to get a good lesson on the genre. The Cajun lobster tail is quite good and unique, and there hot shrimp are as advertised they are hot. The sauce is buttery and similar to hot wing sauce but a bit tangier.. The prices are normal for the type of food they serve and the portion sizes can be somewhat small at times. The service in most cases is like the mood here and can sometimes be a little slow so if you are in a hurry you will notice it more than if not. The building is most unique. It is built on the side of a hill that is rolling along the Licking River. It has a rustic feel that many could relate to something closer to Louisiana. The Front wood screen really helps with this perception. As you walk through the main area you will immediately notice that you may feel like you have been drinking. This is because the building is uneven. This is all part of the charm that sets this place off from other restaurants. it is well worth the trip.
Once a roadhouse tavern before new owners renovated and added the Louisiana-inspired menu..
The slanty floorboards, Formica bar tops and a cabin-styled fireplace of this backwoods restaurant all create the sensation that you are officially in the middle of nowhere. Patrons would be wise to coordinate their visits with the seasonal crawfish boils, as well as try the spicy gumbo with chicken and andouille sausage chunks. Frog legs are few for the price, but where else can you get a heapin' helping of that tender, rich meat?
not recomended. Not friendly, over priced no childs menu, and hardly edible. I would never recommend this place to anyone. Never!
DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY. **PLEASE READ THIS REVIEW BEFORE BLOWING YOUR MONEY** The food is good the service stinks, the Kids menu is a joke and the prices RIDICULOUS. the average price for a good meal is 16 bucks, they charge 4.50 for a small side salad of pretty much lettuce, 3.50 for a small dish of crappy green beans, the "SPECIALS" menu is anything but; you save maybe 2-3 bucks, the drink prices are higher than average. It's a backwoods dump, that tries to pass of as classic Cajun, yeah the food is tasty, but not worth the stupid prices, and did I mention the service is bad, oh yeah and the prices are too high.....They charge extra for side items, but they'll give your kid complimentary ice cream that goes with their 3 choices off the kids menu yes I said 3 that's it, PB&J (who serves pb&j at a restaurant?), A hamburger (crappy processed patty on 2 slices of Italian bread plain, no condiments, no bun), or chicken strips (come on is that it?). Who are they tryin to fool the average person who isn't rich but is looking for good cajun should steer clear. My girfriend, me and my son walked out with a $61.37 bill for 2 etoufees (13.95 each), an appetizer of alliagtor tail ($10.95 for a small 6-8" plate with some bite size pieces of gator tail set in etoufee "RIP OFF"), 3 cokes (4.50), side salad(4.50), a side of green beans (3.50 extra, straight form the can no flavor, not included with meal), and a piece of cake (4.50)and a kids meal (2.95 don't get the hamburger) ALL IN ALL BAD SERVICE, BAD PRICES, BAD BUILDING, BAD PARKING, but hey they got tasty food COMPLETE RIP OFF
Highly recommended. The food is great, the service is excellent, the atmosphere is wonderful. You'll more than likely get more than you can eat for less than you'd expect. The deck seating gives a wonderful view of the Licking River. If you love spicy food, you have to stop by. Even if you don't most things on the menu can be served with less or no spices. Stop in once, and you'll be back again and again.
