OWNER IS A BULLY. I don't know about the food but I do know this. The owner, JOHN CAULFIELD, sat behind me in HS and he bullied me mercilessly. He would insult me and kick my chair and call me names just to show off for a girl named Rosemary LaFleur. I finally had to leave my seat at the front of the class and move to the back and my grades suffered. For years I let this guy bring me down all because HE WAS A JERK. I would throw his food on the floor.
worth the wait.... Everything on the menu is excellent. Try the gator sauted or pan fried rather than deep fried. Try the pan seared grouper-outstanding. The gumbo is the best I have every eaten-not watery and full of only okra and rice. The greens are second best to a certain Alabama man's I know. Try your salad with the onion mustard dressing and the bleu cheese crumbles. The Italian cream cake and Kahlua pie are very good. The only complaint I have is that the bread is so bland and tasteless-but at least you can use it to mop up the juices and creamy sauces from your other dishes.
Our First and Last Visit.
We arrived a few minutes early for our Anniversary dinner out. We did have reserbations. It was our first time to the Knotty Pine on the Bayou.
We were excited to go. We heard it was a bit pricey, however, was to be super good food, but, this was our anniversary and thought we should treat ourselves and have been wanting to go for some time.
We were seated. Our server was friendly. The place was hectic and it seemed to have little coordination.
We ordered drinks. They came and we ordered dinner.
We waited. And waited.
The server came past with an order for another table and just dropped off a second beer for my husband. She didn't bother to ask if I also would like another. She kept on going. Strike One!
We waited. She came by. Asked if my husband would like another beer, I guess it is assumed the man always pays the tip and should have special attention. That is not always the case. Strike two!
She did ask me if I would like another drink. It was more of an after thought. Strike Three! Now I am telling my husband to start deducting from the tip.
She kept calling me sweety! I don't know why waitresses, cashiers and hair dressers have to call you 'hon' or 'sweety'. it is very annoying.
I finally was fed up with waiting for our food and being called 'Sweety" and let her know.
Our meal dinally came. I ordered grilled shrimp. There were about 7 shrimp and a half full plate of red potatoes and collard greens..
My husband had the rib eye, half plate of red potatoes and beans. It wasn't the worst he has had, but has had many better ones. He said it was stringy and not as tender as it should/could have been.
Will we go back? Probably not.
Great Gumbo, Good fried food & hot sauce.
Cool old place with a slanted floor and a wall of hot sauces. The Gumbo is one of the best soup-like creations that I have ever eaten. Next time, I am going ALL Gumbo... plus some good beer and lots of different hot sauces.
Everything is good, but the gumbo is great!
Charming. Fun place to eat and drink. Casual, fun atmosphere! A place I will visit a number of times!
Great food and a great place!!. Went with a group of 8 friends for dinner on a Saturday night in December. The service was great! we were seated right on time for our reservation and served speedily and capably. We ate the range of the menu from filet mignon to etouffee to blackened grouper. Everything was excellent!! The dessert menu leaves a lot to be desired but, honestly, after the excellent meal of generous portions...who needed dessert? I was comparing the evening to "Heaven on Seven" a Chicago area Cajun restaurant I've tried a few times - Knotty Pine is my favorite - hands down!
Don't expect a lagniappe here!.
That Louisiane laid-back approach to life doesn’t exist at he Knotty Pine. It’s quick in, quick out. So don’t expect to sit back and “parler” too long. The authentic Cajun fare, albeit delectable, didn’t come without a price and neither did the “Abita Turbodog” either, at $4.50 a bottle.
WARNING: Large party gratuity tips are figured at 18% of the total bill (including tax), not the subtotal. So you may end up paying around 20% in tips.
My number 1 request for my birthday dinner!. I have loved going out to eat since I was a little girl. For this restaurant to be my hands down favorite really, really says so much! My birthday is in June, and I love sitting at the "back porch" tables looking at the hazy tree covered hills and the Licking River. They have a long sloping yard that leads down to the river, which is perfect to let the kids run for a while during our pre-dinner drinks. The ladies room always has nice, scented hand lotion (not the cheap kind). The service is not slow... it is relaxed and relaxing. This is not fast food, this is a dining experience. Yes, the floor is not always where you expect it to be, the screen door bangs way too hard, sometimes you have to wait for a table. Good things come to those who wait! I always have frog legs for my appetizer, shrimp scampi over pasta and Kaluha pie for my birthday dessert. It makes my mouth water thinking about it! I don't enjoy very spicy food but my husband does, so he goes for the Cajun selections. My kids are happy with the chicken tenders and a salad and playing in the big yard by the river. My dad always has a B&B "up" to savor after dinner. I'm full and sleepy and happy when I leave. Want off the beaten path of cookie cutter "sit down" restaurants? This is perfect, in every way!
Great Food and Service. This is not a huge place so if you want to be seated on a Saturday night make a reservation. We did and got a table on the deck, the food was Great i loved the Gumbo the most!!! Great service i will be back soon and hope everyone gets at least one chance to enjoy this restaurant....Thanks to all
it took well over an hour for our main course after ordering. We made reservations for 5:00. This is the time that they open. We were among the first to be there. From ordering our food to receiving our food it was well over an hour. We left as soon as we were finished eating and it was 7:00. The shrimp scampi over pasta is not even close to being as good as Pompilios. The steak was good. I have heard several people mention that they had good food here. I may try again and order something different from the menu. I don't think that the food was worth the lengthy wait.
