Tips for Tangvald, Thor, Md - Tfa

February 27, 2013

Dr. Tangvald & his team are serous about providing mental health care and therapeutic counseling. They are bound by personal integrity & PHI regulations and are unable to respond to most of the complaints detailed on the internet by mentally ill patients or criminals seeking to fraudulently acquire medications or a free ride from the government. None (in 25 years of practice!) of the complaints against Dr. Tangvald have merit and have been dismissed. None of Dr. Thor's team has ever been reprimanded or restricted from practicing. It is unfortunate people feel free to resort to anonymous harassment. I wish more people would take time to recount their positive experience. Here is an example (with names changed for PHI) of what you need to know about Dr. Thor Tangvald:

"Dr. Thor,

Jane Doe passed away on February 11th. I just wanted to take time to personally thank you for being Jane Doe's psychiatrist. You treated her with dignity and respect. we would also like to share this with Brien. He really is a true blessing as well. My wife and I feel blessed for both of you. Again thank you for everything. John Doe"

If you are serious about addressing your mental health needs Dr. Tangvald and his associates will help you.

He is horrible. I won't even use the word doctor in the same sentence. The office is dark, dirty and the ceiling has major water stains. The front staff is rude. The only saving grace about the place is the therapist Brian Hill. That man is a such a talent but hidden and abused in the garbage can that is Thor's practice. Thor is supposedly there to work on issues you have, but he cant do that. For example, lets say you have issues with conflict and dealing with others. Well he deals with these things and you by saying get out. His office is charging fees for missed appointments that they never disclosed to clients prior. So I brought it up to him in a calm manner and his response was "well doctors I go to do the same". Then I asked, since this is my first time could he work with me on the charges. He stated "his landlord and other creditors don't work with him." So I said "well my work doesn’t work with me when I am late. Like today (his first appt of the day) my appt was at 9:00 and its 9:10. And there have been several other times I have waited to see you anywhere from 45-60mins." To this he gets up and says service is terminated. So one, I guess the truth hurts him about always being late. Second, is this really a person you want to go to for conflict or issues, if that is how he handles issues? He is rude and overbearing. Again it’s a same that Brian Hill is stuck with such a poor excuse for a health worker.

Best Psychiatrist, and I have seen many. Well educated and professional. Very concerned staff. I don't understand the negative reviews.

Unprofessional, Rude and Should not be practicing medicine. I am not one to comment about the services recieved from an office, but I will take the time out to comment on this practice. I would not recommend this place to NOONE and I truly mean that. The way me and my son were treated was totally unacceptable. Our first office visit started out with the doctor stating that he should probably not be practicing medicine for reasons I will not speak of. At that very first office visit he stated at least 5 times in front of my 7 year old that he needed pharmacy records so he doesn't KILL my son. I understand that the pharmacy records are important but in front of my 7 year old son I think different terms could have been used. My son obviously felt weird himself when we left the doctors visit because he looked at me and said mom do I have to keep seeing that guy. I gave him the benefit of the doubt even though I felt he was very unproffesional because I understand people have there days so we continued to go back 3 times within a month and a half because my son was a new ... the services recieved from an office, but I will take the time out to comment on this practice. I gave him the benefit of the doubt even though I felt he was very unproffesional because I understand people have there days so we continued to go back 3 times within a month and a half because my son was a new patient. On the 4th visit we were scheduled at 515 my son and his dad arrived at 5 and was taking back to a room. When I got there at about 505 or 510 at latest I started calling my sons phone so I could make sure they were in there and what room so I could come up. My son nor his father answered the phone within 1 minute I recieved a call back from his dad stating that when my sons phone rang the doctor had came in and heard it and stood up and said he would not tolerate this so on and so on. So when the doctor left the room my sons father called me back and said Im not sure what to do the doctor left the room very mad, but while he was on the phone with me the doctor came back in and told my son and his father to leave he was not goin to see him. Mind you this all took place at 510 and the appointment was at 515 so no time was lost. Not only did he say they had to leave in front of my son who did nothing wrong but also stated that we were terminated and could not be seen there any longer. When I finally got up to the office they (my son and his dad) were coming out. I walked to the front desk to try and talk to someone about being seen and if we could resolve this issue. The only reason the phone rang was because it was I his mother trying to see where they were and I stated I completely understand that phones should be turned off. Noone cared what I was saying the doctor then told me to leave. At that point I was so upset that a so called doctor who cares for kids was so quick to let a patient go and terminate him because a phone went off that he didnt even answer. Its not like this was a persistent issue and we were always causing any type of problems. Needless to say my son was being seen there and was recieving Metadate CD which is a stimulant drug but not one time from a total of 4 or 5 visits did he weigh my son to see if after he started the medication his weight dropped or if he is even within the weight range to be on that medication.

BEWARE. ~If you are looking for a doctor to connect with you on a personal level, as well as help you with all your inner termoil . . this man is NOT for you.

~Dr Thor is obviously a very inslightful and intelligent man with unique methods. And while I'm sure this may work for some, I found it mildly offensive and just plain not for me.

~He seems to take more time examining and judging your life experiences in the NOW rather than taking 5 minutes to actually ask you about your actual FEELINGS and how any medication you are on may be working for you. He asks no personal questions to get a better feel of your personality and past experiences.. which to me are MUST haves for a person who you are paying to help with your head.

~ My last session I actually had a PANIC ATTACK after I left his office, because he upset me so much. I felt as if I was being bullied, or talked down to/judged. This was the last strawl for me and I will no longer be visiting his office.

~I was actually told by this man, and I quote: "I have no skin in this. I dont give a f**k. You need to deal with it." as well as MORE "I dont give a fu**s" than any doctor should ever throw out. Just an FYI.

~ If you are a thick skinned person who is okay with tough love then enjoy the ride. Otherwise, dont waste your co-pay.

if you wanna feel worse about your self hes your man. this guy is a joke, my first appt went fairly well tho i thought it strange that when i asked him why he had toys for little girls in his office he replied "because i like little girls, they get abused all the time" i mean really he could have said they are for children that i see or even for the children of my patients to keep them entertained while i talk with the patients.

anyway i felt a little uncomfortable during my first appt but he was not rude to me on this occasion, within mins he diagnosed me with ADD and aspergers, i had never had symptoms of either one of these but then im not a doctor, maybe he was just a genius that could diagnose me by just looking at me, i humored him and took the meds he prescribed, i was leary at first but did some research on the pills and found they were relativly harmless and were used to treat seizures and bi polar disorder which i had long thought i did have. the meds ddidnt really work again not really his fault.

because of the whole feeling uncomfortable thing i called the office prior to my next appt and asked if i could change the appt to see the therapist at his office instead who i had met with the first time i was there and who had made me feel extremely comfortable, they made the appt with him but upon visiting him he told me unfortunatly given that thor had put me on meds and he was not qualified to change them i would have to see thor, he proceeded to re book me with thor for the very next day.

i went back to thor, within mins he became very rude, im not sure if it was because i said the meds hadnt had any effect or because i had been to see the therapist the day before, he pretty much told me i couldnt be helped by anyone and to leave his office, and that he never wanted to see me there again. what kind of a guy that is spossed to help people through their problems would treat a person like that? how long before a severely depressed patient leaves his office and commits suicide after being treated like a lower form of human the way he does. i can completely agree with all the negative reviews on this guy and can only imagine that the people thaat seam to think he is a good doctor either got lucky or are drug adddicts who managed to get their drug of choice prescribed to them without many questions.

Extremely bad psychiatrist. To say that Tangvald is bad, is to offer unnecessary praise, he is, quite frankly, appalling. My wife was having serious mental health issues and was referred to this idiot and he did little but insult her, call her crude and cruel names, and ended up yelling at her. My wife is a quiet, fairly retiring sort with low self esteem and had gone to Tangvald for advice. She did not need his rantings and profanities yelled at her. He also told her that he wasn't making enough money out of her visit - how professional is that? She left his office in a dangerously depressed condition.

I cannot for the life of me understand why Tangvald ever went into medicine, let alone psychiatry, it is completely obvious that he is totally unsuited for dealing with the public. Moreover, he is, quite simply, extremely bad at his job. If you need a psychiatrist there are plenty of good ones to choose from, however do not trust your mental health to Tangvald - he is quite possibly the worst psychiatrist there is.

Dr. Thor Tangvald. This doctor is a poor excuse for a psychiatrist. He will never get anymore of my money ever again. He told me to shut up and he wouldn't trust me with his shopping. Very unprofessional of him.

Extremely poor mental health provider. My rating of Dr. Tangvald is one star because it is the lowest rating possible. I think he and his group are just awful. As a fellow medical professional, I would choose zero if that were a valid selection for this group of mental health providers headed by Dr. Tangvald. In my opinion, Dr. Tangvald and chiefly his therapeutic associate, a social worker named Mr. Brien Hill, have failed to realize the variability of clients (I know) from the presenting symptoms of what they have diagnosed the "disorders" for those clients. Most significantly, I think that some of the specific disorders with which these clients were diagnosed and "labeled" by Tangvald and Associates were incorrect. That is, I certainly do not see a match with the DSM-IV-TR diagnostic criteria as applied to these clients. Furthermore, where the diagnostic criteria would present a match, I think Tangvald and Associates have sometimes failed to reliably identify the diagnosis. Alarmingly, the subsequent "labeling" of these clients by Tangvald and Associates with the specific disorders they loosely defined, and the subsequent treatment of the disorders (rather than the clients actual symptoms), had unforeseen, detrimental effects on the clients. Based on my knowledge of these clients that I know Tangvald and Associates have treated, I question the reliability of the diagnoses they applied, which has led to what I think is inappropriate treatment, even contraindicated medication administration. I have also seen a failure in the Tangvald and Associates validity of results of assessment. Specifically, I think the assessment techniques they applied to the clients to measure certain criteria would not reasonably measure the desired assessment. Although this group probably has its successes and satisfied clients, I see online that there are numerous clients who have given Tangvald and Associates a poor rating. There is plenty more I could write about with this group, even their apparent failure involving ethical issues, but suffice it to say: Find a mental health group or practitioner that does not have a significant numbers of clients providing poor ratings among the group of available client ratings.
