J Alexanders. Like whodey85 i have also worked in the food industry and i do not like to complain. However my experience with J Alexanders left me with nothing to complain about. Short and simple. Excellent food! Excellent service! Leaving plenty of food leftover. However it is slightly costly but definetly worth the money. You get an excellent meal at the restuarant and with the large portion sizes it leaves you plenty to take home.
Not So Sure. I work in the restaurant industry and go out to eat at least twice a week. When I wait on my tables I make sure that my guests are satisfied and I didn't feel that way at all at J. Alexanders. I am so incredibly disappointed in everything (besides their wonderful martini I had). Our server Jeff treated us different from every other table around us. I think he thought we weren't going to take care of him. But of course we did. The Filet I had I asked for it medium and came out medrare but of course I didn't complain because like I said I am in the industry. My potato had so much butter on it I couldn't even eat it. I spent 100.00 dollars and I am totally disappointed. I guess I was just expecting too much from the restaurant.
Yupscale American eats in a stylish setting in chi-chi Rookwood Commons..
The Scene
Ya gotta admit, the place looks classy. Sleek dark wood and subtle lighting create a tasteful, comfortable atmosphere. Very nice, as long as you don't land a table with a view of the under-construction parking deck.
The Food
Appetizers, salads, sandwiches and entrees sound good on the menu, but sometimes fall short on the plate. The "signature" Maytag bleu cheese cole slaw served with many dishes is an acquired taste. Items like smoked salmon dip, the club sandwich and cilantro shrimp are certainly above par. More attention is given to presentation than to flavor.
The Crowd
While the buzz is still hot, expect to wait a while for a table. The good news is there's a large, well-serviced bar in which to cool your heels.
The Cost
Not too steep by Hyde Park standards.
Romantic and fun. The steak here is amazingly juicy. Great wine, great service. Good place to hang with good company.
What a place for a date. If you want to make a good impression, while still having a blast and feeling comfortable, then this is the place.
